(Bloor and Lansdowne/April 2008)
The TTC is back: what a relief. Too many cars on the road for sure. Cough, cough. Interestingly, the strike likely did a lot to promote bicycles as the perfect alternative to being stuck in a car or paying for the high cost of a TTC ticket or pass.
Also, the lack of bike lanes was not lost on the documentary filmmakers in town last week for the Hot Docs festival: "Lots of bikes but where are the bike lanes?"
The local press also noticed:
Time to get into the lane game (Toronto Star)
Toronto lacks behind as a bike city (Toronto Star)
Toronto: Not so bike friendly (BlogTO)
Let's all hope that the excellent bike summit last week will be the first step to change all this once and for all. I am hopeful that it will.

Mon, 04/28/2008 - 13:34I'm so glad this site is as whiney as other bike blogs in toronto. Whining does sooo much. Grow up.

Whiney
Mon, 04/28/2008 - 14:27Whining sure beats anonymous commenting. Besides who says I do nothing besides whining? http://www.flickr.com/photos/martinreis/sets/72157604742458878/

why not?
Mon, 04/28/2008 - 14:43Certainly some of us do have a caritical edge to our voices that might sound like a whine.
However, some of us have been asking "why not" to obvious simple things for a time, and it can sound like whine, though we should enunciate for the sake of anonymous types and say it as "whine not"...
and yes, tino's done Tons of Great Stuff, positive too...
it's not like the mere facts work...
(oops, I'm sounding -ve, self-cuff, flagellate)

I'm glad there's a lot of positive things happening in Toronto's bike community, you'll find people are happy and upbeat when they get together. Saying that, we need to always press for improvements to the basic infrastructure - that's how things get done.

another area of weakness here
Mon, 04/28/2008 - 23:00I finally got to look at some of the details of the TCAT study/work and I don't think it's been picked up on by mainstream...
The TCAT folks included some gender analysis of users of bike lanes, and the city's with more bike lanes had more women cyclists using them. I know many of us guys like to play in traffic whether Forrester foolowers or not, but there's a further equity in the transportation equity sought.
And I don't believe so much in off-road trails and paths for being as that great a commitment to cycling for gender equity reasons.
