Harbord & Bathurst
Although an official announcement and public education campaign are needed, commuters riding this morning in the bike lane along Harbord were thoroughly enjoying the roominess of the new bike box.
I haven't tried these boxes out yet. Looks pretty good though. I like the advantage of less opportunity to be right-hooked at the light.
One thing that's missing though is one of the main features of most bike boxes: The ability to allow cyclists to get over to the left turn lane. Since this bike box only covers the right lane, it doesn't provide this.
I hope that the future incarnations of these bike boxes cover both lanes in each direction.
Since moving to TO I've found making left turns especially scary on streetcar lanes, since I only want to hit the tracks at a right-angle. Hopefully some of these boxes will show up on those streets.
YAHOO......for the boxes.....it's about time a protective device is available for cyclists at busy intersections, especially when a City drawn bike lane has been on Harbord for years. I do not understand why Toronto is so slow in putting such easy to create devices on the streets. Cyclists can then ride safely and car drivers won't end up mamiming or killing an innocent bike commuter. Again, Yahoo for the bike box on Harbord....We want more, we want more, we want more.....

Tue, 06/03/2008 - 16:58Excellent point, Vic, I was looking at some boxes in NYC and the manage this left turn quite
well. Hope they go with that sort of design.

Left turn, with tracks

Used this for the first time. . .
Wed, 06/04/2008 - 23:55A great start! I'd like to see it filled with a solid colour though, so that it's much more visible.
