Toronto is getting a new window to the waterfront as Simcoe Street is extended with an underpass under the rail lines to provide downtown with more connections to the waterfront and new condos. It is also likely the first new underpass that was originally designed with bike lanes. Hamish Wilson, who sent the photo says: "it will be nice when this opens, nicer when it is extended somehow further north."

Pressure
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 09:33The Simcoe Street extension is going to take the pressure off of Front Street, but it will be a very busy street.
Apart from taking the overflow traffic from dowtown workers, it will also accommodate traffic for the Air Canada Centre, Rogers Centre, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (and its 2 loading docks) and the thousands of pedestrians that flow to and from Union Station every rush hour.
When the Convention Centre opened its South Building in 1997 it was bound by a commitment to extend Simcoe Street - that was 12 years ago, a lot has changed since then.

Oh I can't wait for this. If
Sat, 08/08/2009 - 23:09Oh I can't wait for this. If it weren't for the new modifications to the martin goodman my commute from islington and bloor to king and university would be nearly safe!
Right now I resort to cautiously sidewalking it along spadina to the lake. I will be happy to not have to ride the sidewalk for that little portion I feel bad every time.
But. What is the hold up!? the view of this bike lane teases me ever time I turn right at Front on my way home!
mmmm non suicidal route looks good.
