Not a moment too soon! Nice to know this type of infrastructure is going in as was hinted at in Cyclometer back in November. I will post more and hopefully better photos soon. Check them out. Really nice looking work. This is how you use them.

Beautiful!!
Thu, 05/29/2008 - 14:55Now when I move up there as I always do, and the idiot-driver yells/honks, I can just point to the pavement! Might as well use a different finger than I normally do.

Exactly!

Great news!
Thu, 05/29/2008 - 16:18Just this morning, I was patiently waiting at a red light when a car pulled up on my left, started inching forward to turn right on red, and had me completely cut off when the light turned green, at which point it couldn't move because of pedstrians crossing. Bike boxes will put an end to that - and hopefully drivers complaining about cyclists passing them on the right? I'm sorry your lane is bumper to bumper traffic and mine is not... I would assume that drivers in bus/taxi/HOV lanes also regularly pass cars on the right?
Anyway, after a week of door zone infrastructure, it's nice to see something that gasp I can't find reason to complain about.

Education/enforcement
Fri, 05/30/2008 - 12:02When bike boxes were launched in Portland and NYC there were accompanied by education, advertising and enforcement campaigns. As this is the first I've hear of these boxes, I assume the city is not undertaking any such campaigns. As such, I imagine the bike boxes will be ignored, much the same way bike lanes often are.

Guerilla pavement marking?
Mon, 06/02/2008 - 10:08Perhaps this wasn't installed by the City - and THAT'S why there was no education campaign.

Humour
Fri, 05/30/2008 - 12:32The paint is already noticeably being worn away. At this rate, they'll be gone in a week.
Is there any mention in the bike plan that they'll use permanent paint for the new bike lanes? I think someone at city hall thought of a loop-hole.

New things
Fri, 05/30/2008 - 15:24Could be a test run. The weather has been less than warm lately overnight, so that could have something to with the paint setting properly. Anyway, I have received lots of great comments from people on email and in person so far. Like anything new it will take a while to get used to.
Think I will make a little video of how to use them. Wanna play?

Oh cool.. wont change
Thu, 06/05/2008 - 19:49Oh cool.. wont change anything for me.. there has "been" a bike box there for a year and a half.. in fact.. most interestections have "had" bike boxes for quite some time
:P
This just gives me a little more authority.
