Rogers Rd.Here's a quick status update of the bike lanes that have, are, or will happen in 2008. 26.3km of bike lanes are reported on below. That's about half of of the 50km Councillor Heaps has promised for this year, and summer hasn't officially started yet; we might just make it.
The following projects will be considered by the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee at its June 27 meeting (6.8 km):
- Stanley Avenue (contra-flow lane) from Royal York Road to Superior Avenue, 0.6 km
- Royal York Road from Cavell Avenue to Manitoba Street, 0.8 km
- Simcoe Street/Lower Simcoe Street from Queens Quay West to Front Street West, 0.6 km
- Birchmount Road from Kingston Road to south of St. Clair Avenue East, 2.4 km
- Conlins Road from Military Trail to Sheppard Avenue East, 2.4 km
The following projects have been approved by the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee on June 4, and will be considered at the June 23, 24 City Council Meeting (7.6 km):
- Annette Street from Runnymede Road to Dundas Street West, 1.8 km
- Dupont Street from Dundas Street West to Lansdowne Avenue, 1.0 km
- Marlee Avenue from Roselawn Avenue to Dell Park Avenue, 1.4 km
- Pharmacy Avenue from south of Denton Avenue to south of Alvinston Road, 3.4 km
The following projects are approved by City Council, awaiting installation (9.1 km):
- Logan Avenue from Dundas Street East (including contra-flow lane from Gerrard Street East to Simpson Avenue) and Carlaw Avenue from Riverdale Avenue, 0.9 km
- Yonge Street from Queens Quay to Front Street, 0.6 km
- Royal York Road from Delroy Drive to Mimico Creek, 1.5 km
- Stephen Drive from The Queensway to Berry Road, 0.8 km
- The Pond Road from Sentinel Road to Shoreham Drive, 0.9 km
- Shaw Street (contra-flow lane) from Barton Avenue to Dupont Street, 0.6 km
- Shaw Street from Dupont Street to south of Acores Street/Wychrest Avenue, 0.2 km
- Wellesley Street from Queen's Park Crescent West to Parliament Street, 2.0 km
- Vaughan Road from St. Clair Avenue West to Winona Drive, 1.6 km
The installation of bicycle lanes on Rogers Road has just been completed. These lanes, approved by City Council in the Fall of 2007, extend from Old Weston Road to Oakwood Avenue, a distance of 2.6 kilometres.

Birchmount bikelanes?
Sat, 06/14/2008 - 10:39Ummm .. aren't there already bikelanes on Birchmount roughly between Kingston Rd and Danforth Ave? Counting repainting them is somewhat disingenious, no?
When can we have our South Kingsway bikelanes back?

Missing Links
Sat, 06/14/2008 - 15:38Well there's no doubt this is progress. Overdue progress, but progress just the same.
However, there are some strange missing links still.
And I'm quite cconcerned that anything approved after June 27 won't even be installed this year.
The next PW&I meeting isn't until September, that means Council approval close to October.
I have yet to see lanes approved at that point in the year go in before the following May.
(See Yonge St, See Rogers etc. from last year)
I'm surprised that Dawes in the east end isn't on the list yet. Its a no-brainer with no need to cut lanes or parking.
There's also Milner out in Scarb. and Bellamy where residents would love the area councillor (Mr. Green himself in the latter case) to slow-down traffic, which isn't all that heavy.
No east-west bike lane yet to connect Pharmacy & Birchmount. (not sure where this might go, but its needed to make both viable) .... edit, how about Comstock?
Oh, and what about those well-recieved lanes for Lawrence and Mt. Pleasant?
Still let us all be thankful for SOME progress

This might not be entirely
Sun, 06/15/2008 - 01:45Forward looking items might not be entirely accurate; it's an estimate of what will happen.
I've asked about the timing, too. Apparently staff are confident that it can be accomplished this year, even if approved as late as the September PWIC meeting. The weather is generally good enough into October to get bike lanes painted. But I won't get mad at the weather if it chooses not to cooperate, and we have to wait until spring to see the paint on the road.
Me, I won't be too critical if they don't get all of the 50km finished this year, as long as we get it all approved before October. But, anything after October starts to get counted against next year's 75km. Staff are working very hard to make sure that it can happen.
Whatever you do, don't blame staff. It's their political masters, as we well know, that are holding this process back.

Traffic Circle
Sun, 06/22/2008 - 10:46I was at the Annette/Dundas/Dupont intersection yesterday and once again wondering how a bike lane that's safe for all cyclists will be added here, and it occurred to me that a traffic circle might work better. I'm not a big fan of traffic circles because I don't find them to be particularly pedestrian friendly, but it couldn't possibly be more pedestrian unfriendly than the current intersection. What are your thoughts on a traffic circle at this intersection?

Roundabouts
Sun, 06/22/2008 - 22:52Roundabouts are great for keeping traffic flowing - in Europe where people know how to use them. Over here it would be mass confusion.

Roudabouts
Mon, 06/23/2008 - 10:47I'm not sure a roundabout would be good for that intersection, especially during rush hour traffic. With roundabouts, there's alot of merging / unmerging happening, and it's those types of things that cause more conflict, especially between vehicles moving at different speeds.
A traffic circle there would probably make it difficult for pedestrians to get across too....unless there are ped-activated traffic lights too. But if there are going to be lights, then the circle is made redundant, I think.
