Poor Gordon. He was so happy at the convenience, but at some point in the morning reality dawned. I estimate from the pricing chart that Gordon paid at least $100 for that rental (assuming he kept it at his house for about eight hours).

I surely hope that bixi makes
Thu, 08/04/2011 - 12:19I surely hope that bixi makes it out my way soon. I tried velib recently and it was superb.
The westward expansion should really go to high park, but if it makes it to Dufferin, I will sign up immediately.

I do think Bixi needs to
Thu, 08/04/2011 - 14:15I do think Bixi needs to clarify its pricing and cap its 1-day total rate.
I both understand the pricing and the reason for exponential charges for long-term use.
However, clearly many people don't understand, I've seen bikes all over the City where people will clearly end up dinged for $60.00 or more.
Also, there's taxi + bike logic for the high rates. But really, if your taxi driver waited for you overnight, LOL, the rate would be not much more expensive than Bixi; not the $20,000 cost of the car.
I think capping a day rate at an expensive level (discouraging such use) but at no more than 1/2 the cost of the bike, say $125.00 at the very top; would be a good idea. As long as people do return a working bike.

Kevin, I think you have
Fri, 08/05/2011 - 10:21Kevin,
I think you have greatly underestimated the cost of a bixi bike - I would guess that they cost nearer $1000 judging from how much the dutch style imported bikes sell for.
I do agree that there should be a clear indication of how costs ramp up though - maybe somewhere on the station it should say what the 1 day rate is. A cap isn't a bad idea either (just not $150!)

Somebody also should tell
Fri, 08/05/2011 - 10:37Somebody also should tell Gordon that when cyclists are killed, it's usually at night and (like Bixi) without a helmet. And alcohol is involved more than one-third of the time.

Michael, are you doing some
Thu, 08/18/2011 - 13:19Michael, are you doing some independent research on accident rates in toronto? Because the Toronto Police report on cycling accidents said that the most common variable is sidewalk riding (30%) of accidents. I don't remember seeing anything about alcohol or helmets.

Female cyclist, struck and killed in Uxbridge
August 19, 2011
Jennifer Walker
UXBRIDGE -- A 21-year-old woman was killed Thursday afternoon after she was struck by a pickup truck while cycling on Brock Road.
According to the police, the woman was riding her bicycle on Brock Road, just south of Allbright Road, when she was struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck about 3:39 p.m.
A witness at the scene explained the truck appeared to be swerving outside of its lane when the woman was hit.
"Our roads are always busy with cyclists and it makes it very dangerous when vehicles have to go around," said Ken Maynard, fire prevention officer for Uxbridge, who added two fire trucks were dispatched to the scene.
Police say the cyclist was rushed to the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital and later pronounced dead.
At the accident scene, witness Elmer Jones said that the truck left skid marks across the highway for approximately 500 feet and believed that the cyclist was thrown more than 200 feet.
Mr. Jones said he saw the driver of the Chevrolet truck sitting on another vehicle's bumper, his head in his hands.
"He seemed really shaken up," said Mr. Jones.
Officers closed the road for several hours as they investigated. Police do not believe that alcohol was factor and are asking anyone with information to call Todd Gribbons of the traffic services branch 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

It's horrible news. There are
Tue, 08/30/2011 - 10:02It's horrible news.
There are lots of safe(r) roads up here, that's not one of them.
The Road is actually on the Regions Cycling plan. Go figure.
She was connecting two good side roads when it happened. (separated by one concession).
Still have not heard if charges have been laid. We really need the 3 foot law.
Thanks for the interesting quote from the fire prevention officer. Guess that sums up their thoughts. One less to cause inconveniences for the motoring public?
